If You Don’t Install a Personal Firewall Now, maybe it's too late!!!!

If you’re new with firewall installation, you need to know that there are different types of network firewalls available in the market. Each of these types is meant to protect a certain segment of a network, if not the entire network itself. The personal firewall, in particular, is meant to protect a single computer. This firewall type is sometimes called “desktop firewall”. The protection offered by a personal firewall is not exclusively used for desktop computers. It is also used for laptop and ultra portable computer units.     

Where can one find a personal firewall?

Most operating systems already have built-in personal firewalls. All variations of Microsoft Windows XP, for example, have their own built-in personal firewalls. Even if you’re computer is part of a wider network of computers, and you had a network firewall installed, it’s still important for each computer in this network to have a personal or desktop firewall. This will save the computer’s data, programs, and operating system from being corrupted by malwares, spywares and noise in any event that the network firewall fouls up.  

Do I still need an anti-virus software when I have a firewall installed in my system?

As good as it may be for your computer system, a personal firewall can’t ensure 100% protection from viruses. Unless your firewall has a built-in anti-virus system and a virus scanner, you should not risk your computer’s safety by going online without any antivirus software activated. Dependable antivirus softwares can be downloaded online and the download time wouldn’t take long on a high speed connection. One of the most popular is Norton, who also gives free updates and notifications to its online users.  
 
Do I need to spend for a good firewall system?

Although the top rating firewalls don’t come for free, most open source firewalls are competent enough to protect personal computers. Among the most popularly used open source firewalls are OpenBSD and IPCop. These are simple but highly efficient firewalls which can offer your network and personal computer systems up to 98% protection from outside noise and hackers.

Can hackers still see me when I have personal and network firewalls installed?

If you set your firewall to deny all outside noises and hackers, you can remain invisible from all hackers. Unfortunately, this setting can’t protect you from phishing attempts. Phishing is another term for client information and service theft, and hackers usually do this by sending out phony emails. Sometimes all it takes is for the client to click on a dangerous link to get his/her entire system hacked.

What other forms of firewalls are available in the market?

Personal firewalls are efficient protections for your computer systems by themselves, although it’s advisable to install other types of firewalls as well to complement the data barriers of your personal firewall. Corporate systems that have may have multiple computer networks should especially consider installing network firewalls. Hardware firewalls which are usually built in most routers also help to make firewall systems function better. Some email applications also have software firewalls installed to protect their clients.
